Make and wear renaissance shoes? what material should i use for the soles?

i%26#039;m being a 19th century girl for halloween, i%26#039;ve got the dress, now i understand that i don%26#039;t have all the necessary materials for 19th century shoes so i decided to make some renaissance/medieval shoes since they are easier to make. the question is - should i make them fake (aka make the tops and wear them over normal shoes) or, make the shoes whole and wear them? if i%26#039;m making the whole shoe what material should i use for the sole? it%26#039;s not that warm here and it might rain. thanks!

Your medieval dress should be long and full enough to cover your feet, so perhaps you could just decorate some inexpensive ballet type house slippers.
